AI literacy is the knowledge and skills a person needs to use AI safely and well in their work. It covers what AI can and cannot do, how to write a good prompt, how to judge and check the output, and what data may never be shared with an AI tool.
AI literacy is also a legal duty. Since 2 February 2025, article 4 of the EU AI Act requires companies that use AI to ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among the employees who work with it. The level must fit the employee's role and the risk of the systems they use.
AI literacy is not one course for everyone. A marketer, a developer, and an HR manager use AI differently and need different training. Short, role based courses with real examples from the job work better than a single general introduction.
Keep the training alive: AI tools change quickly, so update courses regularly and track completion, so the company can document that the duty is met.
